Golden hour is a real phenomenon, not a marketing term. The light in the 30 to 40 minutes before sunset is lower in angle, warmer in colour temperature, and softer in quality than at any other point in the day. For outdoor portrait photography, it is the most forgiving and the most flattering light available without any equipment. It is also the most time-pressured: you have roughly 40 minutes before the light drops below usable levels.

What the light actually does

At golden hour, the sun is at a low angle. Typically below 10 degrees above the horizon. The light travels through more atmosphere, which scatters the blue wavelengths and leaves the warmer reds and oranges. The colour temperature drops from around 5500K at noon to 3500-4000K at golden hour. On skin tones, this reads as warmth without the orange cast you get from artificial tungsten light. The low angle also means the light is coming from the side rather than above, which reduces the harsh under-eye shadows that make midday portraits difficult.

Timing in Kanagawa by month

In late July, sunset in Yokohama is around 6:50pm. Golden hour begins around 6:10pm. In September, sunset moves to around 5:50pm and golden hour begins around 5:10pm. We schedule outdoor sessions to begin 90 minutes before sunset, which gives time to travel to the location, set up, and shoot before the light changes. For the Shonan coast and Enoshima locations, we factor in 30 to 40 minutes of travel from the studio. This means a late July session starts at around 4:30pm.

Location scouting: what to look for

The ideal golden-hour location has an unobstructed western horizon so the light reaches the subject without being blocked by buildings or trees. The Shonan coast works well for this. The ocean to the south and west means the light is clean until it drops. Enoshima's eastern shore is less reliable because the island itself blocks the low western light. For Kamakura, the bamboo grove at Hokokuji is beautiful but the canopy blocks the low-angle light almost entirely; it works better in the morning. We scout every new location before booking a client session there.

Permit requirements in Kanagawa

Most public outdoor spaces in Kanagawa do not require a permit for personal portrait photography. Commercial shoots. Where the images will be used in advertising, on product packaging, or for paid editorial. Require a permit from the relevant municipal authority. The application process varies by location: Kamakura City requires a written application with a shoot plan; Fujisawa City (which covers Enoshima) requires a separate form for the causeway area. We handle permit applications for all commercial outdoor sessions. For personal portrait sessions, permits are generally not required, but we check each location before confirming.

Equipment for outdoor golden-hour work

We shoot outdoor sessions with a Sony A7R V and either a 35mm f/1.8 or an 85mm f/1.4 GM, depending on the location and the desired compression. We carry a 5-in-1 reflector for fill and a small LED panel for situations where the ambient light drops faster than expected. We do not use flash for outdoor portrait sessions as a rule. It tends to fight the natural light rather than complement it. The one exception is a very low-power fill flash in situations where the subject is backlit and the reflector is not enough.
